UN Refugee Agency receives appreciation for strengthening interethnic harmony

Jalal-Abad, 20 January 2012 - During a meeting with the Governor of Jalal-Abad province, in the presence of the Jalal-Abad Chief of Interior Ministry and other high level officials, the Mayor of Jalal-Abad, Mr. Bakyt Adylovich Adylov, presented a certificate of honor to the UN Refugee Agency for its significant contribution in strengthening interethnic harmony and contributing to the social-economic, cultural and spiritual development of the city and region.

In 2010-2011 the UN Refugee Agency assisted tens of thousands of people affected by the violence of June 2010 in South Kyrgyzstan. With the completion of the UNHCR emergency transitional shelter project, UNHCR and partners ensured that over 15,000 persons - all of whom had lost their homes - received warm, seismically safe and culturally-acceptable accommodation before the onset of winter. In particular, some 147 transitional shelters were built in Jalal-Abad province.

As part of its peacebuilding efforts, the UN Refugee Agency also supports community-based quick impact projects. In Jalal-Abad city alone, UNHCR supported and funded 23 community-based projects in 2010 and 2011, at a total cost of approximately 3 million Kyrgyz soms. More than one hundred such projects for rehabilitation of infrastructure, livelihoods and community development were completed in rural and urban communities of Batken, Jalal-Abad and Osh totaling more than 30 million Kyrgyz soms. Over the last two years, UNHCR has also been providing social institutions, hospitals and vulnerable people with humanitarian aid such as coal, bed linen, mattresses, folding beds, kitchenware, clothing and shoes.

In 2012, UNHCR plans to continue implementation of small community-based projects as well as distribution of warm clothing donated by Japanese retail company UNIQLO to very vulnerable people. More than fifty schools in Jalal-Abad, Osh, and Batken provinces will be provided with sport items received from the International Olympic Committee and computer equipment for teaching children.

The UN Refugee Agency has been present in Kyrgyzstan since 1995 when offices were established in Bishkek and Osh. The office in Jalal-Abad opened in June 2010. UNHCR assistance to refugees, returnees, stateless and internally displaced people in the country now exceeds 60 million USD.
